Aloha. I am spending this evening clicking on people who follow people who follow me. I came by way of The Alcoholic poet. I will be sober 2 years on the 19th of this month. I attended AA meetings for the first year. I live in a remote location and the second year I began attending fewer meetings. I did not like my sponsor and other members telling me that if I did not go to meetings I was going to get drunk. I will get drunk only when and if I drink alcohol. So I don't drink. Makes sense ? AA works for many others, but for me, I too prefer to go it alone. I am surrounded by drunks where I live, and they are my greatest source of support. They are quite proud of me , and when I am around them , I realize why I no longer drink. That's my story.

Unfortunately, even if resources were in place and available to all, the question would be: 'how many will leave denial and go to resources before they hit the ground?'
It is almost like our Homeland Security . . . they are everywhere and watching everyone, yet they can't seem to stop even the most inept person trying to wreak havoc.

As my old Russian friend so aptly put it: "Dilution is the solution to pollution". Truer words are hard to find, but first it is important to understand 'pollution'. Pollution is that which subverts our self-control. Likewise, 'dilution' is that which aids our self-control. Finding dilution and applying it correctly and consistently, will demonstrate that control of self is impossible, therefore it is the only way to solve the difficulty of pollution.

I agree Libra .. but I would prefer positive re-inforcement for under 11's ... more education of the need to moderate and then the negatives would ''kick-in'' for the over 11's .. This is my view though and every child is different ... good for you thinking about it ... my children learned the hard way how damaging alcohol is ... at least they don't want to try it now ...

I could sy I am not fat I am obese, or not obese but addicted to food or have a proble when I see food - I have to eat it !!! I am still the same person addicted to that substance or idea or physical activity etc ... is that what you were answerng ? I don't think we are bad just that if you should be able to call your own proble by whatever name is appropriate to you. The other people were saying some of us shouldn't sy we are alcoholics ... that is if indeed I am one ; )

Sorry, but I will agree to disagree that an alcoholic, a person dependent on alcohol, or an alcohol addict, is 'bad' - - except 'bad' as in the sense we are all 'bad' . . . no exceptions.

So, how could being an alcoholic be good? Well, if by that route a person is brought to the knowledge such an activity does not bring glory to God, and that person then discovers the Truth . . . alcoholism would turn out to be the best thing that ever happened in that person's life.

Then to hear someone say with a straight face that we come from chicken soup . . I don't think so. I'm always wary of offering advice - sometimes I feel that people need a swift kick in the pants more (or a clatter with a frying pan!). You just have to judge your audience. Folks are never ready for advice, but still we dole it out. You never know - some of it may stick.

Well now - I remember a paradox one time. They used to be down at the old boat landing down by the river. One day, a boat load of crazy fishermen came in and smashed one of those dox totally and it sank. So now we have unodox. So, there it is there - if you want to get shed of a paradox, just find a boat load of fishermen and they will smash the one dox . . . and hopefully leave the best one standing!

All turned out for the best, though, because with one of the dox gone - so was the confusion that came from deciding which one to pull into when all done with fishing, or water skiing, or picking up stranded wind surfers, or whatever other activity goes on when in a boat.

You have listed only two alternatives - and granted, that is reasonable - but there is another alternative that I've seen work in several congregations . . . let the leadership know of the difficulty and suggest that an alternative to wine be served for those who choose to celebrate - but are not at liberty to use alcohol. No place I have heard of will deny such a request . . . and if they do - maybe that is an indication it is not a place of welcome.
